How to Mark Attendance in greytHR: App, Web Portal and Fixes (2026)

Step-by-step guide to signing in and out on the greytHR app and ESS web portal, with selfie, geofence and GPS sign-in, checking your attendance, regularization and fixes when the app isn't working.

Employee marking attendance in the greytHR app with a Sign In button and selfie check on a phone

How to mark attendance in greytHR: the short answer

To mark attendance in greytHR, open the greytHR app, tap Sign In on the home screen, pick your sign-in location if the app asks, and complete the selfie or location check your company uses. At the end of the day you tap Sign Out the same way. On a computer, the Sign In / Sign Out button sits under the date widget on the ESS portal's Home page, if your company allows web sign-in.

What you see depends on the attendance scheme your HR admin picked: some companies use a plain one-tap sign-in, others add face recognition, a geofence around the office or GPS tracking for field staff. Attend Mitra isn't affiliated with greytHR; we make a competing attendance app, and the steps below come from greytHR's own help pages as of October 2026.

Mark attendance in the greytHR app (Android and iPhone)

The greytHR employee app works only if your employer is on greytHR; the store listing says so directly. Google Play lists Android 8.0 or later and the App Store lists iOS 16.0 or later. The selfie sign-in uses your stored employee photo, so it needs camera access and a stable internet connection.

  • Open the greytHR app and log in (see the next section if you're signing in for the first time).
  • Tap Sign In on the home screen.
  • Open the Sign-In Location dropdown and choose the option that applies to you, for example office or client site, if your company shows one.
  • If your scheme uses a selfie, the front camera opens on its own; centre your face in the frame and tap Click Selfie.
  • Wait for the confirmation: greytHR matches the selfie against your stored photo and runs a liveness check (blink or head tilt) before recording the punch.
  • At the end of your shift, tap Sign Out and repeat the same check.

greytHR attendance login on the app and the ESS web portal

Many 'greytHR attendance login' searches are really about getting into the app in the first place. greytHR's help lists four ways to log in to the mobile app, and your company decides which ones work for you:

  • OTP: choose your country, enter your registered mobile number or email ID, tap Next, type the OTP and tap Log In.
  • WhatsApp OTP: the same flow with a WhatsApp code, but greytHR notes this is for international numbers, not Indian ones.
  • Web address: type your company's greytHR address in Log in with Web Address, tap Continue, then enter your Login ID and Password.
  • SSO: after entering the web address, tap Log In via SSO and sign in with your company's single sign-on account.
  • On a laptop, log in to the ESS portal with the same web address; if your company allows web attendance, click Sign In under the date widget on the Home page and Sign Out when you leave.

Geofence auto sign-in and GPS tracking in the greytHR app

Two greytHR options change how attendance is captured. Geofence Auto Sign-in records a sign-in when your phone enters a saved work location and a sign-out when it leaves; it records only those entry and exit events, not a continuous trail. It needs an access code from your admin, and once it's on you can't sign in manually in the app or mark attendance on the web.

GPS Live Tracking is for field staff. Tracking starts when you sign in, and the Sign In button stays greyed out until the app gets a valid location with acceptable accuracy. After sign-in, the home page shows that GPS tracking is on, with a View My Tracking button.

  • Set up the geofence: tap the Profile icon, tap Setup Geofence, enter the access code, give the location a name, set the radius and tap Submit.
  • On Android, set greytHR's location permission to Allow all the time, turn on precise location and exclude the app from battery optimisation.
  • On iPhone, set location to Always, turn on Precise Location and Background App Refresh, and allow Motion & Fitness for GPS tracking.
  • Keep the app running in the background with mobile data on, or entry and exit events may not reach greytHR.

How to check attendance in greytHR

In the app, go to Explore > Attendance > Attendance Info. The monthly calendar shows your average work hours, actual work hours and penalty days; tap a date to see that day's shift, then use the Swipes and Permission buttons for detail. For a list of individual punches, go to Explore > Attendance > Employee Swipes (tap View More if there are several swipes on one day). On the web portal, Attendance > Attendance Info gives the same summary of swipes, shift and overtime.

Managers get extra views. In the app, Mark Team Attendance on the Home screen lets a manager sign a team member in or out by face scan, selfie or location when, say, someone's phone has died, provided that person's face is registered. On the web, managers search a team member on Attendance Info to see first in, last out and work hours, and can download swipe reports from Employee Swipes.

Regularize attendance in greytHR when a punch is missing

If you forgot to sign out, your phone had no signal or a swipe simply isn't there, raise a regularization request instead of signing in again later. Your manager or reviewer approves it, and the corrected day flows into payroll. Our guide to running a fair attendance regularization process covers the policy side.

  • In the app, go to Explore > Attendance > Apply Regularization and tap Apply on the Regularization card.
  • Tap Quick Add to auto-select days with attendance gaps, or tap dates on the calendar yourself.
  • Tap Regularize, check the Applying to field, and type a reason on each date card (the reason is mandatory).
  • Tap Apply; to pull a request back, use View Pending and tap Withdraw.
  • On the web portal, open Attendance > Attendance Info > My Regularizations, pick the dates under Apply and submit to your manager.
  • If you know in advance you'll be late or working from home, apply a permission instead under Attendance > Regularization & Permission, which can save you a regularization later.

greytHR app not working? Fixes for sign-in and login problems

Most 'greytHR app not working' cases come down to permissions, location or an old app version. These checks follow greytHR's own troubleshooting pages:

  • Sign In button disabled: move out of basements, lifts or parking areas, wait a few seconds for GPS to lock, and confirm location is on and set to the level your scheme needs.
  • 'Unable to fetch the current location': retry from a spot with better signal and turn off battery saver.
  • Face recognition failed: remove masks or anything covering your face, improve the lighting and keep only your face in the frame; if it keeps failing, ask HR to check your stored photo.
  • Login page won't load: switch on automatic date and time, clear Chrome's app data on Android, or turn off Safari's Block All Cookies on iPhone.
  • Problems after an update: the Play Store listing recommends clearing the app's data and cache for users updating from version 4.0 onwards.
  • Forgotten password: use Forgot Password on the web login page (enter your Login ID and tap Send Link), log in with OTP instead, or ask your HR admin to reset it.
  • Still stuck: if your admin has enabled it, turn on Diagnostic Logs under Profile > Settings so greytHR's team can see the error (it switches off after 30 minutes), and raise it with HR.

For HR admins: which greytHR attendance methods employees see

greytHR's admin help lists nine employee marking methods: manual mobile sign-in, selfie with face recognition, geofence (alone, with a manual selfie or with face recognition), geotrack (alone or with either selfie option) and geofence auto sign-in. The admin sets one per attendance scheme under Settings > System Settings > Attendance > Attendance Scheme, using the Swipe Capturing Method dropdown and the Selfie Verification option.

Two rules from those pages save confusion. Face-based options must first be enabled by greytHR support as a new feature, and geotracking can't be switched on together with manual mobile sign-in. For geofences, greytHR asks for a radius of at least 50 metres and suggests adding 6–8 coordinates around the building if staff in basements see 'Out of location' errors. GPS Live Tracking is a paid add-on on the Growth and Premium plans.

Marking attendance in Attend Mitra instead, and who it suits

greytHR suits companies that want payroll, compliance and HR in one suite. Teams that mainly need verified mobile attendance, kiosk or QR punching and offline sign-in, priced per employee, may find an attendance-first app simpler. For leave in greytHR, see how to apply leave, comp off and WFH in greytHR; for plans and prices, see whether greytHR is free; and for other tools, read how attendance marking works across other HR apps.

If you're comparing tools, the equivalent flow in Attend Mitra is short. It's described in our help article on clocking in from the employee app:

  • Open the Attend Mitra app on Android or iPhone and sign in.
  • Slide to clock in on the Clock In-Out screen.
  • Pass whichever checks your company turned on: a selfie face match, a geofence check around the site, or the office Wi-Fi.
  • If there's no signal, the punch is saved offline and syncs when you're back online.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to mark attendance in greytHR app?
